The Coach & Horses began in 2014 with a map, a car, and a suspicion: the UK's 'historic pub' listings were padded with rebranded chain bars and venues that paid for the privilege. We built the alternative — an independent, editorially-curated index of Britain's coaching inns, country pubs, and genuine old stagecoach stops, held to a promise that defines us: no venue pays to be listed, recommended, or starred. Ever.

The Coached-inn Register now holds 1,847 verified entries across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. 'Verified' means a visit: our editors and contributors stay, eat, and drink before an entry goes live, and entries are revisited on a rolling cycle because landlords change and standards drift.

Bookings made through the site support it, but inclusion never follows commerce — venues appear because an editor judged them worth the drive. When a listed inn falls off, it comes off the register with a dated note.
